张掖古称甘州，西汉以“张国臂掖，以通西域”而得名，位于青藏高原和蒙古高原交汇的河西走廊中部，自古以来就是丝绸之路商贾重镇和咽喉要道，素有“塞上江南”“金张掖”之美誉。境内祁连山水源涵养区、黑河绿洲、荒漠戈壁三大生态系统交错衔接，雪山冰川、森林草原、七彩丹霞、田畴沃野、湿地候鸟、荒漠沙丘等地貌交相辉映，使张掖成为坐落在祁连山、黑河湿地两个国家级自然保护区之上的城市，被国家列为生态文明示范工程试点市。全市总面积3.86万平方公里，辖甘州区、临泽县、高台县、山丹县、民乐县、肃南县一区五县。2017年末全市常住人口123.38万人，城镇人口58.67万人，城镇化率47.55%，境内有汉、裕固、藏、蒙、回等38个民族，其中分布于祁连山区的裕固族是全国独有的少数民族。
